The Other
Velocity Series, Part 7
Speaker: Dave Gibbons
Genesis 12:1-3, Matthew 22:37-40 and other texts
By what grid do we form attachments,
acquaintances and best friends?
What is the bottom line of our faith?
1Now the Lord said to Abram, “Go forth from your country, And
from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I
will show you; 2And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless
you, And make your name great: And so you shall be a blessing; 3And
I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And
in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
The Top Line: Blessings Received!
The Bottom Line: Blessings Released!
Isaiah 25:6-8
And the Lord of hosts will prepare a lavish banquet for all peoples on this
mountain; A banquet of aged wine, choice pieces of marrow, And refined, aged
wine. 7And on this mountain He will swallow up the covering which
is over all the peoples, Even the veil that is stretched over all nations.8He
will swallow up death for all time, And the Lord God will wipe tears away from
all faces, And He will remove the reproach of His people from all the earth.
Luke 24:45-48
Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and He said to them,
“Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer and rise again from
the dead the third day; and that repentance of sins should be proclaimed in
His name to all the nations.”
Ephesians 2:13-16
But now in Christ Jesus you who formerly were far off have been brought near
by the blood of Christ. 14For He Himself is our peace, who made both
groups into one, and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall, by abolishing
in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances,
that in Himself might make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace
16and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross,
by it having put to death the enemy.
What Can we Do? How can we live out the Bottom Line?
Embrace a Theology of the Cross.
This means bearing pain and staying awhile with people unlike us.

Proverbs 19:17
He who is kind to the poor lends to the Lord.
Amos 5:21-24
I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.
Even though you offer me your burnt offerings and cereal offerings I will not
accept them. . . But let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like
an ever-flowing stream.
Luke 4:118-19
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good
news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovering
sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the
acceptable year of the Lord.”
