JAC-LA / THE SHAW

 JAC Local

Soon we'll be housed in the Newsong LA Ministry Center. This center will serve as a hub for leadership development, justice, advocacy and compassion initiatives. This site will also be the headquarters for ministries such as The SHAW and CSC (Christian Students of Conscience). This past year, we have partnered with THE SHAW to serve our immediate community through “The Lab” which provides music production classes on the campuses of Crenshaw and Dorsey High Schools . With this center we hope to expand our ministry efforts by adding programs such as an after school program, a teen center, drug and alcohol counseling, and vocational training for single mom.

 The SHAW

Mission Statement
The mission of The SHAW Community Transformation Corporation is to holistically transform the Crenshaw, Leimert Park, and Baldwin Hills communities by cultivating urban leaders and making a positive impact in the lives of at-risk youth. The SHAW was created to provide avenues for expressing the positive influences of the hip-hop subculture in these communities to raise leaders and affect long-term transformation in the community.

The LAB

The LAB is an after-school music production class previously offered at Crenshaw High School , and now is being offered at Dorsey High School with hopes to begin at the brand new West Adams High Schools sometime next school semester. Our classes have about 15-20 students with 2 instructors/mentors at each session. Students learn to use and master software and equipment competitive with professional music industry standards.

The goal of the program is to provide our students with a positive alternative to negative influences within the community, a creative outlet, opportunities to learn vocational and life skills, and to encourage them to become leaders in their community.

Quotes:

“I would like this program to continue because this program is helping determine my future goals.” ~Crenshaw High Student

“I would like to do this until I'm professional, so about 2 years or so. This class is helping me reach my goal and I wish I could've did it earlier.” ~Crenshaw High Student

“It keeps us off the streets and we learn something valuable.” ~Dorsey High Student

“I would like to continue this program because this is helping me in the future.” ~Dorsey High Student
